Email Marketing Tips For The Home Based Business
Home based internet businesses are springing up left and right. This is mainly because of the ease of operation and the cost of start-up is minimal. However, as more of these home based business start-ups are being established, it is important for you, as the owner to develop new marketing skills and knowledge in order to keep up with the competition and cope with the ever changing Internet business world.
As an online home business it is important to establish a list of prospects and customers. In order to do this you will need an autoresponder system. I personally use aWeber and Constant Contact. Each one has pros and cons, but either one will suffice for a burgeoning home based entrepreneur. The biggest reason to use a third party mailing house is that you are assured that your messages will arrive at their intended destination and you can set up a single or double opt-in so that you are in compliance with current can-spam laws.
Permission based marketing requires you to obtain the permission of your prospect or customer before you are allowed to send or promote any marketing material. This is beneficial to you because if your prospect or customer opts into your list then you can be relatively sure that they want to receive your information. This also means that you have an greater chance to generate sales.
Many people that are just staring out in their online home based business think that building their list(s) is difficult and requires hard work or skills that must be learned. It does take a little bit of patience and you must learn the autoresponder software but beyond that the sky is the limit.
There are many sources online that you can read and follow when learning how to build a list. Generally they are similar. Below are 4 tips to get you started.
- All the major email services will provide you with the code to put up your own opt-in form. There are different opinions of whether it should be a pop-up or on page. On some sites I use both, on others just the on-page. However, I do have the on-page form on every page of every site because I always want a visitor to have the option to join my list. One of the keys to getting someone to sigh up to your list is by offering them something of value. This could be a digital download of some kind or a physical product. It really depends upon your niche and your audience. One thing is true though, everyone asks for your email so your offer must be valuable enough that a visitors wants to join.
- There is always debate concerning how much information to ask your visitor for. Once again, it depends on your niche, your product, and your audience. As with anything you do in your online business you must test this. Generally, most studies find that asking for the least amount of information is the best. On my niche sites I either ask for a name and an email address or sometimes just the email address.
- As with any kind of business make sure the information, product or service you provide is top notch. If you do not provide true value I can guarantee that your subscribers won’t stay on your list long. One of the things you will have to determine is how many messages and how often you will send them. Again, this will depend on your niche. In many niches that I am involved in, I start off sending something that is content based for the first 4 or 5 days. After that I send less often and start including affiliate offers and/or my own product/service offerings.
- Once you have started building your list you will want to separate the “lookers” from the “buyers.” Once a visitor makes a purchase you are much more likely to sell to them again. Each list, prospect and customer, will require a different set of messages because you are appealing to them in different ways.
So, as you begin your home based business journey learn as much as you can about building a list and email marketing. This will help to ensure your success online.
