Mobile Marketing – Pros And Cons

When examining new ways to market products and/or services I think we need to be researching the benefits of using mobile marketing. The last statistic I read, said that in 2009, 21% off all cell phone users had smart phones. As technology advances and rates drop that percentage will only increase. I have already begun to receive “marketing” messages on my phone.

I wanted to try and determine if the benefits outweighed the disadvantages and here is what I have come up with.

Advantages of Using Mobile Marketing

  • Mobile marketing can target any other device that can access the internet. Some digital devices might include, notebook and handheld PCs, netbooks, smartbooks, and personal digital assistants (PDA’s)
  • It is cost-effective and efficient
  • The mobile market will only grow
  • It is new technology (for marketers) and therefore can provide innovative and new forms of advertising and promotion when used in conjunction with traditional advertising and marketing strategies.
  • It is a versatile marketing tool – SMS can be utilized in a variety of ways, such as attracting new customers, retaining existing customers, and spreading brand awareness for your product or service.
  • Mobile marketing is cost-effective – You could save up to 60% of your distribution and production costs since it is currently more inexpensive than traditional marketing campaigns.
  • It allows you to send out an “instant” marketing message.
  • You can quantify and verify the results of a mobile marketing campaign quickly and easily
  • Disadvantages of Using Mobile Marketing.

  • Currently no opt-in so people could receive spam messages
  • You cell phone number could be passed around to other mobile marketers.
  • WAP – the wireless application protocol for SMS is currently inadequate for Internet searching and surfing.
  • Uniformity of ad display would be difficult because of the sheer number of cell phones and models. To many different screen sizes to make everything appear correctly on every phone.

Those are a few of my thoughts off the top of my head. What do you think? Please comment with other advantages or disadvantages.

  1. The mobile market is huge. I use if for my everyday business and it works. Whenever I have a sale I just send out one bulk message to over 5000 people and hope that at least 10% of them forward it. That is a lot of advertising for the little message that I write.

During your visit to this blog, you may notice that I occasionally promote, endorse, or suggest products and/or services for sale. In some cases, I will be compensated if you decide to purchase that product based on my recommendation. In some cases, I will receive the product for free for review purposes. Most people don’t do anything with the products they buy, so most of the time, their typical results are zero.
