The First Message Is The Most Important

You know that thing they say about first impressions, well it’s true so make sure that your first email to a new list subscriber is a good one. When you are setting up your email campaign, take some time and create a good first impression.

Why is this important? Well, it’s pretty simple really. Someone felt interested enough in your offer to request more information from you. This is one of those magical moments when you have the opportunity to build a real relationship with your new prospect. You have their attention, they are interested in more of what you have to offer and you have permission to continue sending them messages. This is the reason that the first message is SO important. Don’t make it an after thought.

The first message that your prospect receives can have more impact than any other message that you will send. Right now, right this minute you have their full attention. I have compiled a list of things that you should include in your first welcome message in order to get your new relationship off on the right foot. Some of them may seem like common sense but it is amazing how many lists I have signed up for that took no care at all in what they sent me.

  • Confirm that they have indeed been added to your list. You want them to know that the action they took was successful.
  • I like to ensure that they know immediately how or where they can modify their subscription. Many marketers just let the program do the work and place that information on the bottom of the message. I have even seen some that add many extra blank lines so that it doesn’t show unless you scroll down to find it. If you are confident in the information you are sending then there is no reason to be “afraid” of the unsubscribe link.
  • Thank the person for signing-up to your list. Make it sincere, make it real. Let the prospect know you are really happy to have them on your list.
  • Remind them of what they are getting (usually the reason they signed up in the first place) and what they can expect from you.
  • Remind them of how much they will benefit from whatever your offer is.
  • Let them know in the first message how much you value their opinion and give them an opportunity to provide you with immediate feedback. Ask them to provide you with their opinion on your offer and/or anything else that shows you care about they think.
  • Sign each message with a real name.
  • Avoid using jargon that your readers won’t understand. In general, words like “unsubscribe”, and “opt-in” won’t mean anything to your list members.
  • Reward your readers for placing their trust in you. Give them a surprise bonus inside that first message. Let them know that you are not the same as all the other marketers competing for their dollars.
  • The first message you send is going to set the tone for your future relationship. So, once again, don’t make it an afterthought.

  1. Very good list. There are indeed a lot of marketers who don’t put enough thought into their first messages. That can definitely can have a negative effect on their business.
And even if they do put thought into it, it is easy to forget one or two important points that seem obvious when you read them, but in reality aren’t.
Your list gives a very good overview over the most important points one has to think about and could help a lot of marketers. I will definitely keep this in mind.

  2. Thanks for the reply and for visiting. I hope this article will help others as well.
