I Sell Free Information – Is This Right Or Wrong?

Free InformationI will be the first one to tell you that generally you don’t have to buy any kind of information product because you can probably find it for free online. The caveat is that you will need time, effort and a good knowledge of all kinds of search engines and how to use them to their full advantage. Now before you decide to never buy another information product, read a little further and see why I think it may just be a good idea to buy that free information. Take it from a guy who researched and found everything I needed to get started in this business and finally got smart and made the switch.

There is no one on earth who does not seek out information of some kind. Even in the most poverty stricken countries of the world the general population seeks out ways to make their life better, or find more food, or how to get clothing for the winter. The point is that information is what makes the world go round.

The next point is that much of that information is free. All you have to do is turn on the T.V. at night, tune in to your local news and you will probably hear a report on the latest and greatest way to treat your illness (you pick the illness) and this was all free information. OOPS!, wait a minute, do you have cable, or directTV, then maybe it wasn’t totally free after all. Oh yeah, you did buy your TV, right? Oh? You found your information online. Do you have to pay for your internet connection? I see, you are very smart and go to the library and use their computers and read the local paper there. How did you get there, car, bike, bus? You see, that free information is never really free.

You might be saying, “Rick, let’s be reasonable about this.” Well in order to make the point that information is not free, you sometimes have to make a point, and that’s what I want you to understand. Information is not free. In some way, shape or form you must seek it out and pay for it. That’s where the line between free information and paid for information gets a little bit blurred.

Let’s take Adwords for example. Most smart marketers want to learn how to use Adwords to promote their products, services and business. Google, being the wonderful giant that they are has provided you a great site that teaches you all about their interface. However, that great information is not all in one spot and some of it is a bit difficult to get through. So if I (or you) were to write a step-by-step tutorial, or better yet a step-by-step video to explain everything, that is all in one place, do you think that would be worth paying for?

You can apply the above example to almost any niche or market. What is your time worth? By the time you research a topic thoroughly there may be new information that you will have to evaluate as well. Not only that but just how much time do you have in your day to research how to do something? How many different articles, books, videos must you go through to get the answers you need? If you are content with making less than minimum wage then by all means continue researching everything yourself.

I hope you are getting my point. If your time means nothing to you, then you probably don’t need to buy that information product because you can find the information for free. However, if you feel your time is valuable (and you should feel this way), then you just might want to reconsider and spend a couple of bucks to save yourself countless hours of grueling research.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree? Why do you buy what you buy? Is it to save time or something else? Please share with our readers your motivations.
