Niche Marketing Short Course – Part 2

How To Find A Niche Market, Even If You Don’t Have Any Ideas!
In the previous article we talked a little bit about what niche marketing is, why you should consider niche marketing, and how to determine what niche market to enter.
In this article we are going to cover how to find a good niche market even if you don’t have any ideas yourself. One of the easiest ways I know of to research a niche market is to simply go to Borders or Barnes and Noble bookstore. Be sure to take a pen and paper or your laptop so you can take notes. Proceed directly to the magazine rack.
Why would we want to use magazines as a niche research tool? Quite simply because ALL of the research has been done for us. Magazine publishers spend a lot of money when researching a topic to determine whether if a magazine will be profitable for them. If you see many magazines on a specific topic then you can bet that niche is very profitable. Take fashion for example, there are at least half a dozen magazines that are directly related to fashion. They all could not continue to publish if they weren’t making money.
Even if a topic only sports a couple of magazines it only means that there is less of a public interest for that topic. That doesn’t mean that you can’t make money. In reality the market is tighter and more targeted. Many times this can be even more profitable than trying to break into a larger niche.
Another reason to search through magazines is to see what kind of content they are producing. I can guarantee you that as you track each one you will see the same topical information coming up over and over. The reason is that this is what the consumer is looking for. When you identify that trend then you also have a market that will work for you.
One last reason to scan through these magazines is for the advertisements. Advertisers pay A LOT of money to be in some of the larger niche magazines. If you keep track you will see many of them there on a regular basis. What does this tell you? If they are there consistently then, they are making money as well and you have possibly found another niche market that is complimentary to your main niche.
Niche research using current magazines is one of the best methods I know of to narrow down a niche that you are interested in or could be interested in. Where else can you get millions of dollars worth of research for $3-$10 (the price of the magazine)? For my money it just doesn’t get any better than this.
Now that you have learned how to leverage your $5 magazine for millions of dollars worth of research I am going to give you another method that works very well too.
Go and find books that have a topic that interests you. Don’t just find any book on that topic though. Find the ones that start with titles like – “How To,” “. . . For Dummies,” or the “Idot’s Guide To . . .”
These books are topics that people are interested in. One of the best sellers there ever has been or ever will be when it comes to information marketing is the “How To” kind of book. People are always looking for the answer to a question and that question, many times, is “How To.”
I hope you are beginning to see that the research part of information marketing can be as easy as going to the book store.
Now, if you are really lazy and just can’t pull yourself up out of the chair, I will give you one more method.
