Nothing Is Set In Stone

Set In StoneEvery day you can hear or read the latest Internet marketing “victim” crying out, “Don’t do this because it doesn’t work.” In their mind that is true and in all aspects of life perception is reality. The victim here has stated what we call an absolute. Absolutes, in business are probably responsible for more failures than anything else I can think of. But why? Why are absolutes so dangerous? Are they wrong? Well, that kind of depends on who you ask. Best way to explain is with an example.

Let’s say John Doe takes up article marketing. He starts writing a ton of articles. He then submits them to all these article directories, each one pointing to his blog or sales page. A week goes by and no sales. Another week goes by and no sales. Finally, after a month of doing this, John Doe proclaims that article marketing doesn’t work. He tells everybody what he did and shows his results. There is no doubt about it, article marketing didn’t work…for him.

Here now is the reality. Article marketing, like so many other marketing methods on the Internet, is composed of quite a few variables. Any one of these variables can adversely affect the performance of the article. For example, there is the article title. If it isn’t captivating, people won’t read it. There is the article itself. If it’s boring or doesn’t have enough information, the reader won’t click through to the site. There is the choice of keywords. Did the author choose the right ones. There is the resource box. Was the call to action compelling enough.

But article marketing goes way beyond the article itself. What about the site that the article is sending people to? If you’re sending prospects to a review blog and the review is poorly written, they’re not going to buy the product…at least not on YOUR recommendation. What about the sales page? If the marketer didn’t check to see if the product itself is even converting, that could explain the lack of sales. A sales page might have tons of leaks on it, like outbound links. Heck, it’s quite possible that the article marketer put the wrong link on his blog and that’s why he’s not getting credit for sales.

The point I’m trying to make is this. Anybody who comes to you with absolutes is speaking from their own very biased opinion and experience. Naturally, somebody with quite a bit of success as a marketer might have a better understanding of what they’re talking about than others and maybe if they say something is garbage, it might very well be. However, nobody is perfect and ultimately, the only way you’re going to know if something works or not is to test it yourself.

So when you are reading or listening to people talking in absolutes, take it with a grain of salt. There is nothing in life that is absolute other than death and even then if you believe as I do you can have life after death.

During your visit to this blog, you may notice that I occasionally promote, endorse, or suggest products and/or services for sale. In some cases, I will be compensated if you decide to purchase that product based on my recommendation. In some cases, I will receive the product for free for review purposes. Always use due-diligence before making any purchases and never purchase anything that you cannot afford. Most people don’t do anything with the products they buy, so most of the time, their typical results are zero.
