List Building – The Brown Way

Unless you are brand new to information marketing I am sure you have heard the phrase – “The money’s in the list.” I would be willing to bet that you have even purchased products that have promised to teach you how to create  a great list. If you are anything like me then you probably weren’t impressed with the majority of them.

Recently I purchased a copy of Jimmy D. Brown’s List PROFIT System course to review for my readers, and of course to see if it had anything better, different or more unique than other list building courses I have read.

What I already knew about Jimmy was that he is well known in the Internet marketing world for a few things:

  1. His integrity.
  2. His ability to break complex tasks down into systems that work.
  3. His products always over deliver.

What I found with this course showcased his ability to break down a process and teach it in a step-by-step system.

As I read through The List PROFIT System, I realized that this is basically the exact same system that every “guru” on the web uses to make money. The difference is that it is laid out in simple terms so that any “newbie” could understand it and apply it. Secondly, even if you are somewhat knowledgeable in information marketing, there are still plenty of tips, techniques and advice that will make you a better list builder.

Jimmy seems to be a fan of acronyms. I have seen many of his products use acronyms effectively. This course is no different. The acronym used this time (PROFIT) is very appropriate. Here’s how he breaks the course down:

P – PROMOTE your list.
R – REWARD the optin.
O – OFFER a proposal.
F – FIXATE attention.
I – INITIATE a response.
T – THWART the filters.

PROMOTE:
In the PROMOTE section of the book Jimmy speaks to the importance of list building. In this portion of the book Jimmy makes it clear that there is nothing more important than building a list. He states that there is nothing you can do for your information marketing business that will be more beneficial than building your list. He doesn’t just leave you with that, he teaches you how to drive targeted traffic to your opt-in page.

In this section Jimmy states: “The important thing that I want to stress is this: everything you do must work towards building a list. You have to have that mindset as you are growing your business. Ask yourself the question “How can I use what I am doing right now to add more contacts to one of my lists.” Promote your list. That’s objective number one. Always. That doesn’t change.”

REWARD:
The reward portion of this course is based around something we should all, already know, and that is giving the visitor something of value in order to get them to opt-in to our list. However, that is the simple explanation. There are a couple of things that Jimmy does in this portion of the course that will benefit you no matter what your experience is.

  1. TYPES – There are four different types of subscriber collection options that most people use in building their lists. Jimmy goes over these and points out which ones gets the best results.
  2. TUTORIAL – You will get valuable insight in how to design and opt-in page that pulls the response you desire.
  3. TRIGGERS – In this section you’ll find out about the 7 opt-in triggers that will convince up to 90% of your site visitors to instantly and eagerly join your list.

OFFER:
There is no doubt in my mind that you have been on someone’s list whose sole purpose in life was to send you offer after offer after offer until you got sick of the offers you finally opted out of the list.
In this section you may just learn a whole different approach to the “list” and what it can be used for. You will learn how to use your list to create products, gain testimonials, find partners and a few more things. Your list is there to help you make money but there is more than one thing your list can do for you.

This was my favorite section in the book. It really got me thinking about how I can better utilize my list. The very best thing is that by making a couple of changes in how I approach my lists I built better relationships with my customers and prospects which means they are more loyal to me than ever!

FIXATE:
The attention span of a customer that has to choose which email to read is short and hard. If you don’t grab them right away, then you don’t grab them at all. This is my second favorite part of the course because I gained a lot of insight in to how to craft great headlines so i could be sure my emails would be opened.
I was able to learn how to build a huge swipe file of great headlines in just a couple of days. These have been invaluable in marketing to my various lists.

INITIATE:
We all know the goal of the opt-in page, or the newsletter, or the sales page, or the email is to force a response. A repsonse that will make money for us. In order to do that you must provide content that is useful to your readers.
Jimmy uses a catch phrase that I find intriguing. He says provide content that is “useful but incomplete.” Have you ever purchased a product like that? Pretty interesting when you actually think about doing it yourself. So in this section he talks about ways that you can use to give your users good, solid content and still allow yourself to back-end a product, send them to an affiliate link or whatever purpose you have pre-conceived for the information.

THWART:
This section is all about how to get your emails through to your customers or prospects. Don’t think that all you have to do is sign up with Aweber or another good autoresponder service. There are several other things to consider when emailing your list:

  • Spam Filters – Even though your email may pass the muster for your autoresponder to send it out, doesn’t mean that your message will actually get their inbox. You might wonder what I am talking about so let me ask you a question. Do you have a spam or other filter of some kind set up on your email? Do you think the people on your list might have the same thing?
  • Mass Delete – How many times do you just mass delete your emails without looking at them? Do you think anyone on your list might do the same thing?
  • Competitors – You also have to share the attention with your competitors and they may be mailing out a lot more than you. How do you get the attention instead of your competition?

These are areas that Jimmy covers that will save you tons of time and big headaches.

Ok, so now for my opinion on The List Profit System.

The Good:
This course is the most complete list building course I have come across. It is easy to read and understand and goes into great depth in each area. You get four bonuses that are pretty darn good in and of themselves. For me personally I love that fact that you have both the book and the audio. I can access the material just about anytime I want to.

The Bad:
It’s pretty hard to come up with anything negative in this product. If you decide to buy it and find something negative feel free to come back to this post and comment on it.

As far as I am concerned, this is the best list building course I have ever read, especially at the $37 level. You can’t hardly buy any product these days with a 90+ page book and audio files, plus 4 great bonuses without going into the hundreds of dollars.

If you are new to information marketing this will be one of the absolute best purchases you could make. This is one of those basic skills that if you don’t acquire and learn to be good at you will not succeed.
If you already have a pretty good list and are confident in your list building ability (about where I was) then I guarantee that you will still find nuggets of great information that will help you get to the next level.

I loved this course so much that I purchased resale rights so that I could provide my readers with what I believe to be one of the must have courses if you are serious about your business.

If you want to build your lists faster, bigger and better then use this link to purchase The List Profit System.
