Out of all the holidays that we celebrate, this is one of my favorites. Not because it focuses on me as a father but rather it reminds me of the great gifts that God has given me to watch over, encourage and grow. As you begin or continue to grow your business be sure that your children and your family have greater priority. You can always make money but you can never get the time back that you miss with a loved one.

Below is a video about a song called the Cat’s in the Cradle by Harry Chapin, you can find the lyrics below the video. This song reminds me very much of my father. When my father died, my brother sang this song as a memorial at his funeral. We both did a lot of crying that day and much of it was because of this song. We both realized that at that point in our lives this song was a self portrait. For me that was a turning point and changed the way I did business forever.

He came to the world in the usual way

And he walked away but his smile never dimmed

Well, he came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
“Son, I’m proud of you, can you sit for a while?”

“What I’d really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?”

I’ve long since retired, my son’s moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, “I’d like to see you if you don’t mind”

You see my new job’s a hassle and kids have the flu

It’s been sure nice talking to you”

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He’d grown up just like me
My boy was just like me
