Outsourcing Basics

Outsource Your Way to Success
Outsourcing is one of the most valuable tools you can have in your arsenal an yet there are still many people who do not really understand it, how it works, how to start, where to look, etc.
Outsourcing is one of the best ways to encourage continuous growth in your business. Below you will find the most basic questions and answers to what people have asked me concerning the outsourcing of their work.
- What is outsourcing?
Outsourcing in the most simple form is paying someone else to do certain tasks or duties for your business. It could be writing articles, making blog posts, creating graphics or mini-sites, basically anything that will help your business and free you up time to do whatever it is you do best. You can outsource work to a company or to independent contractors. - How does it benefit me or my business?
Once again in the most simple form, outsourcing allows you to have more time to be productive in the area of your expertise. Let’s take article writing as an example. Take into account the time it would take you to write a 500 word article. If you are not a writer then it could take you upwards of an hour to do, not counting the time you would take to research it if you needed to. Now that same article could be outsourced for as little as $3 – $20 depending upon the content, quality and length of the article. Would you work for $3 an hour? Would you work for $20 per hour? Even if you would work for $20 per hour, that’s one productive hour out of your day that is spent doing something you don’t do as well as a professional writer and it has cost you at least $20 either way. So what is the better option? Grind it out yourself or pay someone? - How do you choose a good contractor?
First and foremost make sure the person you are outsourcing to is competent enough to do the task you assign. Ask for samples of their work and then ask for references. Don’t simply ask for the references, actually call them and ask them questions about quality, time frame, honesty, communication, etc. There are several online resources you can check out to outsource a great majority of your work. These sites have some built-in safeguards such as a rating system, open and closed bidding on your job, and the opportunity to communicate with each vendor. These features will help you choose the best contractor for your job but my advice is to specify that payment will not be made until the product or service has been completed to your satisfaction. Most freelance sites also have an escrow account in which you can deposit money if the project is of a larger dollar amount. This shows the contractor that you have the money and are serious about paying for the project and also protects you because the contractor cannot have access to the money until you are satisfied.
Don’t be afraid to outsource. As entrepenuers we tend to try to control everything and want a hand in how everything is done. What you need to learn is that in outsourcing you still have control, you still approve the process and end result and you get it done faster, usually better and your business and projects will move along at a much faster rate.
