Backlinks – Why You Need Them, Where To Get Them

Links - Backlinks - Hyperlinks

One of today’s most sought after SEO (search engine optimization) components is the backlink. In case you don’t know what a backlink is: it is a link from another website that is directed to yours. This kind of a link is also known as an inbound link. The reason they are so important is because Google gives more credit to websites that have a large number of quality backlinks. They consider those site more relevant and therefore come up higher in their results pages when people do a search.

Now, when it comes to backlinks it is important to have QUALITY inbound links. What exactly does this mean? Basically it means that if a site that links to you has content that is similar or related to the content that you have it would be considered a quality inbound link and therefore be more relevant in Google’s eyes. If the inbound link is from an unrelated site or one that does not share related content then that link is given less relevance.

When building backlinks to your site there are a few things you want to do. The first thing is to keep track of the sites that are linking to you and what anchor text is being used. Anchor text is the “text” that is being used when sending a visitor to your site. My wife and I own a digital scrapbooking site. You can see that the words “digital scrapbooking” is actually a link to that site. Those two words – “digital scrapbooking” are the anchor text used for the link. They also happen to be keywords that we use to drive people to our site. It is important to use as many keywords and keyword phrases when collecting backlinks to your site so that people searching will have an easier time finding your site.

I came across a tool recently that I found to be very beneficial. It is called the Backlink Builder Tool. This tool searches for websites that have a related theme to yours. You specify a particular keyword or keyword phrase in their search bar, and then the tool seeks out related sites for you. I found this to be extremely helpful because it generated a list of sites that accept links and that are related to the search term I input. The search term I used was also a keyword phrase that I want my site to rank higher for.

So when you begin to build backlinks be sure to use quality anchor text that should include keywords and/or keyword phrases that you people will search on to find your site.

Another good tool I found on the same site as the Backlink Builder Tool was a Backlink Anchor Text Analysis Tool. This tool will help you find your backlinks and will tell you what anchor text is being used when linking to your site. One of their suggestions (which is a good one) is to evaluate whether the anchor text being used is beneficial to you. If not then simply contact the site’s owner and ask if the anchor text could be changed to incorporate a relevant keyword or keyword phrase. You will find several other useful tools on Webconfs.com that will help you to create a better site by knowing more about your own site and your competitors.

A couple of my favorite tools to drive traffic and give me back links are MyWayLinks and RSS Power Pro. MyWayLinks is a total link control strategy. It allows me to choose from hundreds (and growing) of PR1 – PR5 sites (at time of this writing) that will link to my site, using my keywords as anchor text.  It is an awsome way to get high ranking back links easily and inexpensively. The second tool I use is the RSS Power Pro software for blogs or stand alone sites. This software give me tons of backlinks from the RSS feeds that I give to the RSS Aggregators. Once it is installed and you put it to work the links are almost instntaneous. It’s a great piece of software.

The last tool I use is called Neurolinker which is an automated link building system. With Neurolinker I have been able to not only increase my number of backlinks but as long at the network grows so will my backlinks. There is also an article marketing feature which is great and will put content on other webmasters blogs with links that point back to mine. Last but not least is the Social Bookmarking that is available to all members. You simply bookmark sites that you want to and in theory those webmasters will in turn bookmark yours. It’s a win-win situation. Check out Neurolinker, it is definitely worth the money.

Hopefully this article has given you a basic understanding of backlinks, their importance and a little bit about how to use them and build them. If you want your website to become more poplular and easier to find this this backlink process is one you will want to incorporate as soon as possible and keep it as an ongoing task.

  1. No matter how good your content is, you still need links to let the search engines know people “like” your content and thus link to it.

Directory Submissions are still the norm and still important, but dont over look links from other sites like Twitter, Facebook Pages and You Tube.
